A few days ago, I downloaded all of Pushing Daisies. I only have a couple episodes left to watch for the end of season 2, and I do believe I love it.

For those interested, Den of Geek has a review of the Spanish 1931 version of Dracula.

There’s a Secret Santa being hosted over at [info]doctor_donna. Go here to post what you will and won’t write—and here to post your e-mail address in a screened comment.

10 Favorite Faux Deaths In Science Fiction. Daniel Jackson’s many, many deaths aren’t mentioned in the article, but they are in the comments.

I also keep going through the fandom list at Yuletide, and finding other things I could offer, while removing things from the list I originally had after more consideration. I’m also starting a list of shows I should try to watch again by the next time Yuletide rolls around. They include Wonderfalls, the first three seasons of Eureka, Forever Knight, Dead Like Me, and Popular.

With the last one, I watched the first episode on Youtube, but I’m not sure it’s worth continuing--I only gave it a chance because of stumbling across this clip. Any other suggestions?

There’s a new trailer for Waters of Mars, and you can watch it here.

A new trailer is out for the Sherlock Holmes movie.

In other news, for some unknown reason two issues of Cat Fancy arrived in our mailbox. We’ve never subscribed to it, and they weren’t sent to the wrong address. Just here…even though we aren’t subscribed. I flipped through the one on top, and saw a picture that looked exactly like my late cat. Until then, we had never known what breed she was. Apparently, she was a Ragdoll, and the fur type was seal point—all we knew was the seal point part, because of a comment the vet made in the past. The article described the personality of her exactly. The appearance exactly, and said they all had blue eyes—her eyes were definitely blue.

It also said they need another cat, or a medium-sized dog to attach to, so they won’t feel lonely. Which explained the relationship between her and Toby.

Dear Yuletide Letter [Nov. 5th, 2009|09:04 am]

This is just for whoever gets assigned me in Yuletide--everyone else can ignore it.

I originally put this behind an LJ cut, but it doesn't seem as long as I first thought. First of all, thank you for signing up. As you should be able to tell from the prompts, I’m really not too picky about what story I receive.

1. Castle. The prompt: After watching the Halloween episode of Castle, I want to see a fanfic where Castle really does encounter something supernatural, and nobody believes him at first. Make it as funny or as scary as you want. I’m fine with it being ghosts/possession, vampires, werewolves, whatever you feel like. So long as you have fun with it, I’ll be happy with whatever I get. Alexis might just humor her father, until she sees he isn’t kidding about whatever supernatural element it is. Whatever happens, so long as there’s humor in it, and you have some fun with the prompt, I’ll be happy with it.

2. The Mummy. The prompt: After the second movie. What if there were some serious repercussions of resurrecting Evie? What if she brought back something else, too? For the request from The Mummy series of movies: I do wish that it stick to sometime either during or after the second movie. I’m just looking for the repercussions of resurrecting Evie. Some elements of humor on occasion, if at all possible. Either possession, more reincarnation issues, or some sort of entity stalking them. Maybe they get haunted. Go with your imagination, though, and have good characterization and I should be fine with it.

3. The Librarian series of movies. The prompt: In The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mine, we saw a glimpse of Pan’s flute. What’s the story behind them acquiring it? It can be as bizarre, or funny as you wish. As I stated in the prompt that was e-mailed to you, you can make it as corny and out there as the movies, and I’ll love it--if you come up with a better idea than Pan's flute and would rather use that, go for it. I’m just desperate to see any fanfic at all in this fandom.

4. Ghostbusters. The prompt: Gozer tries to return at some point during the 5 years between the first and second movies, and since Peter seems to always be getting possessed, he ends up possessed by Zuul or just another minion of Gozer this time. Include as much humor or horror as you wish. Dana horrified at seeing a possession, and remembering her own, perhaps? Rather than being broken, have her better able to deal with the thing than the others, knowing what buttons to push. Perhaps have Peter/the demon inside him trying to open the portal to Gozer’s dimension on his own, and everyone trying to stop him?

Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies, but I don’t want to put you under any pressure. It can be as dark, or as funny as you wish. You can take another path to the end result of Gozer trying to come back. Or you can do another plot entirely.

Again I say thank you for writing something for me, whoever you are.

From what I could tell, I was the 820th person to sign up. I signed up for 21 fandoms.

[info]thisissirius is hosting the Merlin Magical Reveal Meme. Basically, in the comments over there, you write a way that Merlin reveals his magic to Arthur.

After watching Io9’s clip from Kung Fu Zombies, I need to track this movie down. The only other hopping zombie and/or vampire movie I’ve ever found was Mr. Vampire.

Yuletide sign-ups are now open! I’ll be signing up very soon, but I’m currently trying to think of three fandoms that I want fanfic from. I’ve come up with two as of right now.

Last night, I went to bed a little early due to a headache, and taped V and Dancing With The Stars. I watched V this morning, and then—just as Dancing With The Stars started—the tape decided to commit suicide. Things suddenly went to nothing but static. The tape inside tore itself out, wrapped around a few things in the tiny tv in my room, and managed to somehow get the tv to turn itself off. The tv is fine. The tape was just used too often to tape things over the years, so it’s just dead.

So…I’m going to look around and see if I can find a download of it.

You can watch David Tennant hosting the latest Masterpiece Contemporary here, if you’re interested.

For those that are signing up for Yuletide this year—when the time comes, you will apparently need to use Firefox to do so. Thankfully, I have the portable version. It also looks like the Yuletide nominations page has been cleaned up some more, if you want to take a look at it.

The grand total donated for the Support Stacie Auction in the last round was $40,692.63.

The Merlin fandom is doing a Secret Santa this year. You can sign up here.

I just finished watching a download of Repo! The Genetic Opera. I think I liked it--not the gore or Paris Hilton aspects of it, but the rest of it. Although, that was probably mostly due to Sarah Brightman, Anthony Stewart Head, and Alexa Vega.

Found Some Cat Pictures [Nov. 1st, 2009|03:07 pm]

calliopes_pen
For anyone interested, Dad found two pictures where the cat and Toby were having what looked to be a conversation through the fence. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find one where they were touching noses, or he was licking her when they thought nobody was watching.

We also think we’ve figured out why he was so obsessed with her, and had a nervous breakdown with any other cat that stood near me. It’s because she was the first animal he saw as a very small puppy, once he was out of the pound, going by what Rhonda has said. He may have imprinted on her.

This first one is from 2004. This is from 2006—he’s rolling onto his back for her, while she sniffs him. And going back through the LJ Scrapbook, I see I have a better picture of just her here.

Trick-or-Treaters Actually Arrived [Nov. 1st, 2009|01:14 pm]

I just had a weird idea, that I thought I would pass along to those that write Merlin fanfic. Arthur and Merlin accidentally get sent by a sorcerer to the present day—on Halloween night. Just imagine them trying to attack the monsters, and being horrified that children would pretend to be demons.

BBC America will air Waters of Mars on December 19th.

Last night, we actually got a few trick-or-treaters—the last few years we didn’t get any, but this time we had 7. Most of which weren’t wearing costumes--one little one was wearing her pajamas from what I could tell. For all I know it could have been something to do with a cartoon, but it looked like her pajamas.

One kid was dressed as a pirate. A little later, I looked out the door and saw a golf cart (with a horrible muffler or something, since the thing was loud) driving down the street. The kid that got out was dressed as Rainbow Brite. Rather than say trick-or-treat, she said “Happy Halloween!” And when I gave her the candy, she curtsied and said “Thank you!”

Every few seconds, I kept seeing flashes of light—turned out the parents were taking pictures, most of which were blocked by our van. After she got back in the golf cart, the flashing started again. It was completely dark, so I doubt the pictures will turn out for them.

Shortly before the trick-or-treaters came, Toby escaped. He hadn’t been interested in escaping since the cat had died, so I assume that after a suitable period of mourning, he wanted to check things out. He reappeared inside his fence just when I was about to give up on finding him.

The Trunk-or-Treat thing at my church got 500 trick-or-treaters. So I guess that's where they all go.

And lastly, a meme—taken from about half my friends list.

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

My Doctor Who fanfics are all at Teaspoon, over here. Any other fanfic can be found through the “fanfic I’ve written” tag.

Happy Halloween! [Oct. 31st, 2009|01:19 pm]

The Scary/Funny History of Horror Comedy.

Over at [info]doctorwho, there’s a question about who would do what if everyone in the series went to go see The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I can picture the Ninth Doctor brooding in the corner, while simultaneously keeping an eye on Jack. Who would be dressed as Rocky. I can picture Martha surprising everyone with the fact she is a closet Rocky Horror fan, and knows every word in the movie. I can see Donna surprising people (especially the Tenth Doctor, who would be in awe) by flawlessly doing the Time Warp.

Today’s Halloween related poll over at [info]polloftheday was asking what your favorite Halloween songs are. Mine are Thriller, Bad Moon Rising, the Ghostbusters theme (of course), and The Monster Mash. If I Put A Spell On You is the same song that was sung in Hocus Pocus, then I love that one, too.

Mom’s been going through some old pictures she found, and we found a picture of me the final year I went trick-or-treating, when I was either 7 or 8. I was a pirate, without the fake earring, since it pinched too much. I’m standing in a yard filled with fake tombstones, made by a neighbor. All the names on it are people in her family that were still alive...and Dracula.

We also found a picture of White Cloud, the day she came to us as a kitten. And another taken one month before she was killed—so now we know how long she was here. About 3 years--we hadn’t been sure until now. We found various other pictures of her, all of her asleep. Which is pretty much the only thing she ever did.

Beneath the cut, I answer five questions from Azriona, for a meme. )

As there are Trunk-or-Treats being done at four different churches, as well as a fall festival at another church, I don’t expect to see any trick-or-treaters. I actually haven’t seen any trick-or-treaters in this part of the street in 2 or 3 years. How many do people on my friends list normally get?

What are you going to be for Halloween this year? Are you going to wear coordinating costumes with a friend or partner? Did you buy something pre-fab or make it yourself?

Unfortunately, I haven't had an opportunity to dress up since I was probably 7 years old, when I realized there was no point to me trick-or-treating, as I hated candy, and simply gave it away to the trick-or-treaters that showed up at our door.

I love to see costumes others have picked or made, though. The best costume I've ever seen pictures of is the one that someone made and wore to a convention--a Weeping Angel costume.

If I ever did have somewhere to go, I would buy a costume. There's no way I would actually make one myself. And if I did wear a costume, I would have to avoid wigs, as they make my head itch, and make-up/fake blood, as I'm allergic. And rubber masks, since I either get too warm in them and get sick, or just can't stand the smell.

Nerd Man of the Month: Christopher Eccleston.

Waters of Mars finally has an airdate in the UK. November 15th, at 7 PM. David Tennant confirmed it in an interview, here—around the 52 second mark, I believe. For anyone that wants to watch the rest, just know that they show a couple clips of Waters of Mars. They asked him to spoil everything for his regeneration scene in one of the specials, but he didn’t.

Today is the last day for sign-ups for the I Saw Three Ships Ficathon. I won’t sign up to write an OT3 in Doctor Who, as I don’t know enough about the ficathon as a whole, but I just wanted to spread the word for everyone else.

NBC is ordering six more episodes of Chuck, in addition to the 13 already ordered.

What If Zombies Ate Most Of The Mystery Team? Apparently, the only survivors would be Velma and Scooby. You need to read the comments as well--if you can’t see all of them, you’ll have to go to the bottom of the page and click on Show Hidden Threads.

Syfy plans to do an American version of Being Human. That can’t end well.

The 15 Cursed Movie Objects You Never Want To Own.

18 Movies That Genuinely Scared Us. I don’t believe I have seen a single movie on this list.

From Cracked: 7 Horrific Boogeymen Used To Scare Kids Around The World.

Yuletide news: If you defaulted or were banned in previous years, you are now allowed to participate this year, as they are extending amnesty. As long as you write a story this year, you will still be allowed to join in on Yuletide in the future.

And now, answering some questions for neadods, from a meme. )

First, the fandom meme:

1) Post a list of up to 20 books/movies/anime/TV shows/video games/bands [fannish etc.] that you've had an obsessive fannish love or interest in at some time in your life.
2) Have your f-list guess your favourite character/member from each item.
3) When someone guesses correctly, strikethrough the item and put the name of your favorite character next to it.

1. Doctor Who
2. Torchwood
3. Ghostbusters
4. Dark Shadows
5. Firefly
6. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
7. Angel
8. Highlander: The Series
9. Merlin
10. Veronica Mars
11. Castle
12. Being Human
13. Eureka
14. Hercules the Legendary Journeys
15. Xena: Warrior Princess
16. Monk
17. Psych
18. National Treasure
19. The Mummy (the three movies)
20. The Addams Family

I have to recommend a Merlin fanfic I just discovered, that is utterly hysterical. Zombies, Like Ninjas, Make Everything Better, written by [info]netgirl_y2k. Zombies attack Camelot. Merlin isn’t allowed to carry a sword, and instead carries a ladle and wooden spoon, with a pot over his head at one point.

From Cracked: 6 Popular Monster Myths (That Prove Humanity Is Doomed). And The 6 Creepiest Places on Earth.

For those interested, the mods of [info]yuletide have decided that Babylon 5 and Crusade are eligible after all. I only watched a few episodes of the former on the Sci-Fi Channel a couple years ago, so I won’t be signing up for either one. The US version of Life on Mars is also now on the eligible list, while the UK version is not.

If any of you have attended a convention in Tampa, Florida the weekend of June 18-20, 2004, I'm looking for video, audio or perhaps a transcript of the events. Christian Kane was one of the guests, along with J. August Richards. Chris and Steve performed an acoustic set during the con.

Any help would be appreciated.

Everyone needs to read this obituary in The Paducah Sun. It’s hysterical--I think someone just went insane. Just let me know if you can’t see it--it wasn’t something where you had to log in, so it should be fine. Mentions of underwater basket weaving, and other weirdness is in there.

From Io9: When Monsters Change Sides: 10 Horror Icons Who Turned Good. Real Ghostbusters gets a mention in there.

31 Classic Halloween TV Episodes and Specials

Beneath the cut is a question and answer meme—answering questions from Persiflage_1, and also an icon meme from Ithildyn. )

Also, Mom would like to know what you can do to kill ladybugs, or get them to leave everyone alone. In the last three days, they’ve taken over. One step outside, and you are covered by ten, at least, with more diving for you. The entire front of one neighbor’s son’s house is covered in them, and he can’t walk outside right now. It’s only our side of the street in our neighborhood—Nellie’s house is fine, as are a few others on that side.

And is anyone else having trouble with logging in to AIM today?

ETA: After reading my friends list, I see that at least a few people are having issues with AIM being down, so it's not just me.

In other news, when Mom got the mail, she discovered a sympathy card from her brother. To all of us, about the cat.
